High Eye Pressure and Glaucoma

Raising Awareness About Lowering Eye Pressure

Glaucoma affects millions of Americans, but many don't know they have it. We're committed to helping protect people’s sight by spreading the word about about high eye pressure and open-angle glaucoma.

High eye pressure (also known as high intraocular pressure or high IOP) can put you at risk for glaucoma. When pressure in the eye is high, it can hurt the optic nerve. You can't usually feel high eye pressure. And there often are no symptoms at first. Since damage to your sight can't be fixed, it is important to have regular eye exams—especially if you are at risk.

Keep taking your XALATAN as prescribed for controlling high eye pressure to reduce the risk of developing glaucoma.

As of March 2011, latanoprost ophthalmic solution is available in a generic version. If XALATAN has worked to reduce your high eye pressure, and you would like to continue taking XALATAN, talk to your doctor about writing your prescription for XALATAN only—no substitutions.

High eye pressure

High eye pressure occurs when drainage channels in the eye clog. This increases pressure in the eye. High eye pressure usually doesn't hurt. But that doesn't mean that it isn't damaging your sight. When the optic nerve is damaged, you have glaucoma.

The good news is that some high eye pressure can be treated. Just 1 drop of XALATAN in each affected eye every day can help control your eye pressure and may reduce the risk of visual field loss and open-angle glaucoma. Using XALATAN as your doctor prescribes can be an easy way to take control of your eye health.

Glaucoma

There are many types of glaucoma. But open-angle glaucoma is the most common type. And while open-angle glaucoma is linked to increased pressure inside the eye, not all patients with glaucoma have high eye pressure. It means that your eye pressure may be normal and you would be still at risk of glaucoma. It also means that you may have some type of glaucoma that doesn’t respond to eye pressure lowering treatments such as XALATAN. See your doctor to determine what type of glaucoma you have and if it is related to high eye pressure.
